Baron Edmond de Rothschild Montagne-Saint-Émilion 2018 🇫🇷
Drank this glorious wine in summer - but joyfully lingering on....this is a very lovely mid priced Right Bank Bordeaux 🙌🍷❤️ (£18), 14%abv (high alcohol and full body).
As usual disagree with some of Majestic's tasting notes lols. 🤣 But this taps into the fact there probably are some nuances between individual tasting profiles and being able to pick certain aromas up. They said tobacco and chocolate, but I honestly didn't detect at all (but someone else may)! I found this wine to be still rich in fresh ripe fruit, with a strong savoury component. We shared some aromas and flavours in agreement, such as cherry and plum. 😂
Overall it's a smashing, ever evolving red, with a med plus finish, high acidity and smooth tannins.
My humble opinion:
It could be left to age longer to encourage the development of dried fruits and tertiary notes...but here's what I was experiencing:
👃savoury notes of forest floor and mushrooms, some kind of spice - perhaps liquorice, but after that hit, I detected strawberries 🍓, raspberries, cherries 🍒 (black and red) and black plums.
👅 The fruits are rich and still jam packed and ripe. Apart from maybe a hint of dried raspberries, I was still experiencing dark wildish strawberries 🍓, plums, cherries🍒, vanilla too on the finish, with with a meaty component of dense savoury. But all very very pleasant. And with every glass I was finding new aromas and flavours. Quite the find for this price!
Produced by Domaine Edmond de Rothschild Heritage, from the Montagne-Saint-Émilion appellation in Bordeaux, France. It primarily features Merlot grapes, with secondary contributions from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc (I believe).
You may well recognise the name - Rothschild, which is the same family behind some of Bordeaux’s most expensive wines! The family brings all the same expertise to making this wine too and apparently Montagne-Saint-Émilion is one of the only Saint-Émilion satellite appellations with high enough quality wines to use the Saint-Émilion name. 🧐
